The term Botox® actually refers to the brand name for a specific drug called Botulinium Toxin Type-A, which is manufactured by Allergan Inc. Another well-known brand is Azzalure ®. Clinically, Botox and Azzalure contain the same active ingredient (Botulinium Toxin Type A) and is essentially a targeted and licensed version of the same drug for different medical and cosmetic purpose.
(Botulinum treatments can also be used for excessive sweating- Hyperhidrosis.

How do Botulinum treatments work?

Wrinkles and frown lines are due to hyperactive facial muscles around the eyes and lower forehead. These may give a person an angry, tired, or displeased appearance – even when they are not experiencing that emotion. Botulinum treatments are effective because they are able to paralyse the tiny muscles on the upper face by temporarily disrupting the nerves which supply them.  By relaxing these muscles we can subtly reduce the undesirable effect and decrease the propensity to form wrinkles.

Where can Botulinum Treatments be used on the face and how long does it last?

Botulinum treatments are best used to treat the Crow’s feet around eyes, the frown lines between the eyebrows and forehead lines. It cannot be used extensively on the lower face and is far more effective for upper facial rejuvenation. It takes 2-10 days for the full effects to be observed. The treatment effects typically last 4-6 months, although longer effects can sometimes be observed around the eyes.

What side-effects can occur?

The actual injections can cause some temporary pain and stinging but the treatment is quick to administer. Bruising and tenderness may also be experienced, and this may last a few days. It is normal to experience a dull minor headache or heavy feeling across the forehead especially after the first injection. Some patients experience an uneven action of the Botulinum toxin across the forehead due to differences in muscle strength; this can be corrected by an additional treatment at 10-14 days to paralyse any muscles that are exerting a stronger pull compared to weaker ones. We offer all patients a complimentary review session after 1-2 weeks to ensure that patients leave with the desired result, so it’s important to factor this in when booking your treatment. Very rarely, drooping of an eyelid can occur but this is rare when Botox is given compared to another form of Botulinum toxin called Dysport.
