What Is Light Therapy for Skin Cancer?
Light therapy treatment for skin cancer, also known as PDT, is a modern technique that uses a combination of light and a photosensitising cream to target and destroy cancerous cells. This method is particularly effective in treating superficial basal cell carcinomas and actinic keratoses.
What Is Light Therapy For Skin Cancer and How Does It Work?
During light treatment for skin cancers, a special cream is applied directly to the affected area. This sensitiser is absorbed by abnormal or cancerous skin cells. After an incubation period of around three hours, a red light at 630nm wavelength is directed onto the skin. The light activates the sensitiser, which then destroys the cancerous cells without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.
The skin may appear red and feel sensitive after treatment, but most patients recover fully within 1 to 2 weeks.
